Season’s Greetings friends (and family)!
Christmas Day is swiftly approaching and I’m finding myself sandwiched between the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. I’ve come a long way over these past 5 Christmases and have been reflecting on each one of them, and what I’ve learned, while anticipating where I will be in my healing journey by next Christmas.
We’ve had quite a few new subscribers join us over these past several months, most of you have come our way through the recommendation of Long COVID: Insights from a journey back to wellness | Mardi Crane-Godreau, PhD | Substack, so I’m assuming that you or someone you love is one of us rare 10% gems who know all too well that the chance of getting Long Covid in 2024 is the same as it was in 2020. If you’ve seen Jenner Furst’s new documentary about unmasking the truth, you are probably also aware that the Covid virus may be affecting cancer rates.
However, Hope is the beginning of healing and Hope precedes the decision to do something because you believe in it, so let’s not give in to despairing, hopeless, thoughts because if what Dr. Mardi and I have suspected about the correlation between Long Covid and mitochondrial health, is indeed correct, then my current hopeful hypothesis is this-
Taking care of our precious mitochondria and metabolic health is imperative in order to minimize the damage done to the mitochondria by the virus that causes Covid and to heal after Covid infections. I think that taking care of our mitochondria can also be applied to preventing or healing from cancer and applied to preventing or healing from other chronic illnesses.
One day, in the depths of my Long COVID (LC), I listened to a blog about dysfunctional mitochondria. Despite brain fog, I was curious.
Could mitochondrial dysfunction (MD) be involved in LC? If so, what would be needed to care for my mitochondria?
Dozens of scientific publications later, I had chewed through mitochondrial connections to COVID-19, mitochondrial function and metabolism and, importantly, what causes mitochondrial dysfunction. I was inspired by articles on the mitochondrial biogenesis, the process of repair and replacement. The implications of MD in the nervous system, especially the brain, raised hope and gave added reason for patience and persistence.
Living in a “post” covid world in which viral cellular damage is being done, and especially since covid is the gift that keeps on giving, means that doing things to care for your mitochondria is becoming more important every day. That means that this applies to you even if you don’t have cancer or long covid right now……..Mitochondrial Dysfunction
As I was researching what to do about what Covid did to my mitochondria; I heard a scientist say that I needed to fix my mitochondria. Once your mitochondria are damaged that’s a bit easier said than done, but with time (in my case) the things I was learning about fixing my virus damaged mitochondria became more and more doable; things like limiting sugar intake, shifting to a low carb diet, fasting (autophagy), and exercise….. For those of you who have long covid or cancer, I heard your gasp at my use of the word “exercise”, but hear me and Lily, the long covid dietician, on this-
The people that I have seen recover the most do not confuse pacing with inactivity. They know the only way through is building up physical resiliency, and that includes movement, no matter where the starting point is.
What I've Learned About Long COVID - by Lily Spechler (substack.com)
Reading these snippets from past newsletters helped remind me of how Leaving Death in the Dust got started, and it was about this time 2 years ago when dad started chemo, so I thought it would be a good time to re-read the newsletter about the long 6 weeks between dad’s cancer diagnosis and the beginning of his cancer treatment.
I prayed, a lot. I bought Tenenbaum’s book and did additional research based on resources I had already found during my own search for healing answers from long-covid, and mom began helping dad implement the supplement and dietary changes needed to help fight dad’s cancer. Dad was not able to do everything in Tenenbaum’s protocol, but by Thanksgiving, his labored breathing was clearing up, his energy levels were improving, he was feeling much better, and he was on his way to coming up with his own health care protocol based on the work of others who had gone before him. The positive effects dad experienced from the prayer, supplements, and dietary changes, were achieved within a time frame of about 2 weeks.

As for Christmas present, my 2024 Long Covid update has just been added to the newsletter, My Long-Covid Experience - by Stephanie Schaible, MT (ASCP) which can be found along with my other newsletters that are specific to Long Covid. If you have not had a chance to visit the Long Covid Corner subsection of Leaving Death in the Dust, clicking on the provided link will take you there.
Shortly after Thanksgiving, my husband came down with something flu like (not Covid) with a cough and chest congestion that lingered for several weeks. At the beginning of December, and only a couple of weeks after recovering from what I had caught in September, I came down with what my husband had. The minute I felt the sinus drainage start and the tickle in my throat, I hit this V-word with Anaferon, Elderberry, Pomegranate, Lemon, NAC, and Aconitum napellus 200c. By day 9, I was back on my feet, and none of my Lyme symptoms flared up!
